The Try Hockey for Free event at Bird Arena gives southeast Ohio youth ages 4-12 years old a unique opportunity to play hockey with Ohio University Division I and Division II collegiate hockey players for free. All hockey equipment is provided by Bird Arena’s Learn To Play Hockey (LTPH) program and no skating experience is necessary. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 30th from 6:15-8:15pm.

When asked what makes the Try Hockey for Free event unique, the director of the LTPH program, Philip Oberlin, stated, “The Try Hockey for Free event is unique because no other sports program in the area offers kids an opportunity to get geared up with collegiate athletes and experience what it’s like to play a sport which is completely foreign to most of the youth in the Athens area.” The event’s main focus is to promote another recreational option for kids within southeast Ohio to participate besides the traditional recreation programs such as football, basketball, baseball and soccer. Oberlin went on to say, “Our goal for the Try Hockey for Free event is to promote a fun, social and educational experience for kids and parents alike.”
