A year ago from this past Wednesday, March 18th the Athens community and especially the hockey community lost a loved friend, teammate, son, brother, uncle, cousin and nephew.

Sgt. Nicholas James Stachler, born April 6, 1983 in Athens, he was the son of Pamela M. McCoy Stachler of Athens and the late James Howard Stachler. Besides his mother, he is survived by a sister, Heather (Dan) Anerino of Athens; a brother, Logan Hoon of Athens; a niece and nephew, Lucia and Carter Anerino.

Nick was a 2002 graduate of Athens High School and an Athens Youth Hockey Association player all the way through high school. After high school, Sgt. Nicholas James Stachler served three tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom with US Army Alpha Company, 325th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg, NC. Nick passed away last March 18th 2014.

In honor of Nick we will be hosting the second annual Nicholas James Stachler Memorial Game/Skate at Bird Ice Arena. We invite all members of the Athens community to come out and remember Nick for the great person he was and to help keep his memory and love of hockey alive and well within the Athens community. This event is to honor Nick Stachler and to raise funds for a scholarship in his name for an AYHA player or players. Whether you’re ready to play or you just want to support the cause, please come out. Gate charge is $10 per person, with all proceeds going to the scholarship. If you can’t make it to the skate, you can donate via Give Forward at http://gfwd.at/1CBzUtg

Last year through the event and donation site we were able to raise, over $4,800 and hope that we can do even better this year.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 28th from 4:00-8:00pm.

The event schedule is as follows: Youth Game (Under 10 years old) 4:00-5:00pm, Community Skate 5:00-6:00pm, Adult Game (11 years and up) 6:15-8:00pm.
