Meet the Bobcats

Ohio University’s Division II Men’s Hockey team was established in 2009 and played its first official game in 2010. The Bobcats are proud members of the Southeast region of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). Since 2011, the Bobcats have been active members of the Tri-State Collegiate Hockey League (TSCHL) and compete against conference opponent’s Bowling Green State University, University of Dayton, University of Louisville, Miami University, Ohio State Universtiy, University of Pittsburgh, Xavier Unversity and newest league member Indiana University.

The Division II Men's hockey team schedule also includes nationally ranked teams such as; Liberty University, University of Maryland, Pennsylvania State University, Virginia Tech and more.  On average, the Bobcats play a forty game season including playoff games as well as the region and national tournaments.  Since 2011, the Bobcats have made four trips to the TSCHL playoffs, three appearances in the TSCHL championship game, and one TSCHL championship coming in the 2017-2018 season. Their first trip to the ACHA Southeast Regional tournament came during the 2013-2014 season followed by another appearance in the Regional tournament during the 2016-2017 season. That same year, the team defeated #3 ranked University of Toledo earning a spot in the National tournament. Since that moment in OHIO Hockey history, the ACHA Division II Men's Ice Hockey team coined the name "D2 Heroes".

The Division II Men's hockey team typically carries a 25-30 man roster including goaltenders.  The players come to Ohio University from all over the United States. Each with different hockey backgrounds, experience, and exposure to the game.  The current roster is made up of players from High School and Prep School teams, Post-graduate schools, Midget-Major AA & AAA, and Tier III junior hockey.  No matter where the players come from, once they have arrived on Ohio University's campus the expectations and responsibilities are the same for each student-athlete. Those expectations and responsibilities are to come to practice everyday with a positive attitude, the desire to work and compete, and have the drive to get better every time they put on a Bobcat jersey.  In order to ensure that each student-athlete is not falling behind in the classroom, the ACHA requires that every rostered player must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA effective after one full school year.

The Division II Men's ice hockey team practices on-ice twice a week with a possible third practice depending on the situtation heading into a weekend. The team genrally plays two games a weekend (Friday-Sunday). Many of the members of the team workout on their own time at the university's recreation center located on campus. Each player will be held accountable to progress on the ice, academically and as men in the community.  Memebers of our student organization always find time to give back to the community that supports them.  The Bobcats participate in events such as; Marching in the annual Ohio University Homecoming Parade alongside the AYHA youth players, assist with Inclusive Recreational Events at Bird Arena and assist participants in Bird Arena's Try-Hockey for free event.
